Hooper Bay, Alaska
A remote Alaskan village on the banks of the Bering sea
is home to approximately 1000 residents and accessible only by boat or
plane. Local transportation was historically by dogsled but has largely
been replaced by the snowmobile. Village dog populations have increased
over time due to no access to veterinary care.
Dr. Ellingson traveled to Hooper Bay to conduct free spays, neuters,
vaccination and health checks. Dr. Ellingson and his team also gave
presentations to the school children to raise awareness for proper
animal care, vaccination and dog bite prevention.
“In up to 99% of cases, domestic dogs are responsible for
transmission of
rabies virus to humans, which occurs mostly through bites or scratches, usually via
saliva. Rabies is 100% vaccine-preventable, yet the disease kills almost 59,000
people
every year – or one person every nine minutes, 40% of whom are children living in
Asia
and Africa.”

treating
people for bites was invested in management of the rabies situation in wild, stray
and
pet animals it would have dramatic impact on reducing human cases worldwide.”
